Canio gains X1 Mult every time a face card is destroyed. It starts at X1 and there is no cap.
Read that again, because half the guides on the internet get it wrong: Canio does not double. Destroying a face card takes it from X1 to X2, then X3, then X4. A single The Hanged Man is worth an instant X2, which is why the card is so strong early, but you are climbing a ladder, not riding an exponential.

The real problem with Canio
Every face card you destroy is a face card your deck no longer plays. Jacks, Queens and Kings are 10 chips each and they are the backbone of most poker hands you actually want to make. Canio asks you to shred them.
So the whole skill of playing Canio is pacing. Destroy 6 face cards in Ante 3 and you have X7 Mult attached to a deck that can no longer make a Full House. The rule that works: destroy on the shop screen and between blinds, never in a panic mid-round, and keep one or two Chips Jokers around to cover the chip count you are throwing away.
How to feed it
The Hanged Man. Destroys up to 2 selected cards. Two face cards is X2 gained from one Tarot. This is the cleanest fuel in the game and it is available from the start.
Glass cards + Glass Joker. Glass cards have a chance to self-destruct after scoring. Enhance a King with Justice, play it, and when it shatters both Canio and Glass Joker tick up. One destruction, two multipliers.
Trading Card. If the first discard of a round is a single card, it destroys it and pays $3. Discard one face card per round and you get steady, controlled scaling plus income. This is the least disruptive feeder.
Pareidolia. All cards count as face cards. This removes the supply problem entirely, and it is the single biggest upgrade Canio can receive. It also unlocks Sixth Sense as a feeder, since the destroyed 6 now counts.
Cartomancer or Vagabond. Neither destroys anything directly. They generate Tarots, which means more chances at Justice and The Hanged Man, and holding junk Tarots in your slots raises the odds the ones you want show up.
Perkeo. Duplicates a random consumable when you leave the shop. Hold only The Hanged Man and you get a free Negative copy every shop, forever.
What it fights with
Anything that pays for face cards. Baron wants Kings held in hand, Shoot the Moon wants Queens, Triboulet wants them played and scoring. You are destroying them. Pick one plan.
Blue Joker. Gives +2 Chips per card remaining in your full deck. Canio shrinks the deck, so Blue Joker shrinks with it.
The Plant. Debuffs all face cards, and face cards destroyed while debuffed give Canio nothing. Do not spend Tarots during that blind, it is pure waste.
Abandoned Deck. Starts with zero face cards. Canio has nothing to eat until you build a supply, which usually means it is dead weight for two antes.
Where it does work
Erosion is the honest synergy nobody mentions in the same breath. It gives +4 Mult for every card your deck is below its starting size, and Canio is actively shrinking your deck. Two Jokers, one habit.
The Mad World challenge starts with an Eternal Pareidolia, which makes Canio scale off literally any destroyed card. Small deck though, so pace yourself even harder.

Verdict
Take it on Ante 1-5 and build the run around destruction. Take it on Ante 6 and only if you already hold The Hanged Man or a Glass setup. Past Ante 7, there is no time to climb the ladder, sell it for $10 and buy something that scores today.
FAQ
No. Selling is not destroying. Only actual destruction effects count: The Hanged Man, Glass card breaks, Trading Card, Immolate, Boss Blinds that destroy cards.
Yes. Blueprint copies Canio's current X Mult, so a Canio at X8 with Blueprint next to it is X64 on the hand. Four of the five Legendaries are copyable, only Chicot is not.
Yes, and permanently. Madness will eat it since Legendaries from The Soul carry no Eternal sticker. Do not run Madness alongside a scaled Canio.
