Astronomer
All cards and in the shop are free
What Astronomer does
Astronomer makes all Celestial Packs and Planet cards in the shop cost $0. The discount applies to base Celestial Packs, Jumbo Celestial Packs, Mega Celestial Packs, and any standalone Planet card that shows up in the regular shop slots.
Astronomer contributes no mult on its own. The value is entirely economic: every shop pass with Astronomer can now include Planet packs without paying for them.
Why "free Planet packs" is huge
Planet cards level up the hand type they're named after. Each level adds chips AND mult to that hand:
- Level 1 Pair: 10 chips × 2 mult
- Level 10 Pair: 25 chips × 11 mult
- Level 20 Pair: 40 chips × 20 mult
Free Celestial Packs mean you can grind hand-type levels without trading shop money. A run with Astronomer typically reaches level 10+ on its primary hand type, where without Astronomer you'd be at level 3-5.
Astronomer + Constellation
Constellation gains ×0.1 Mult per Planet card used. Free Planet packs (Astronomer) mean unlimited Planet uses → Constellation grows fast.
Combined: Astronomer + Constellation pumps both hand-type level (Planet effect) and Constellation X mult. A focused run uses 30-50 Planet cards by Ante 8, hitting Constellation ×3-×5 plus level 10+ on your scoring hand.
Astronomer + Telescope
Telescope makes the first Celestial Pack purchase each ante guarantee a Planet card for your most-played hand type. Free Celestial Packs (Astronomer) + guaranteed targeting (Telescope) = guaranteed hand-type levels for your main hand.
The trio Astronomer + Telescope + Constellation is the classic Planet-card snowball build.
Astronomer + Black Hole
Black Hole (Spectral) levels every hand type by 1. With Astronomer, you might find more Spectrals in shops too (depends on pack rotation). Each Black Hole is a one-stop hand-type levelup; pair with Perkeo for Negative copies and you have infinite Black Holes banking.
What Astronomer doesn't do
- Doesn't make Buffoon Packs, Standard Packs, Spectral Packs, or Arcana Packs free. Only Celestial and Planet cards.
- Doesn't generate Planet cards — you still need shop rolls to find them.
- Doesn't help if your build doesn't care about hand levels (some X-mult-only builds derive most score from joker stacks, not hand levels).
When to take, when to skip
Take Astronomer:
- Single-hand-type focused build (Flush, Pair, Three of a Kind) where leveling matters.
- Constellation in play or planned.
- You're banking cash and want to spend it on hand levels rather than shop joker rolls.
Skip Astronomer:
- Joker-X-mult-stacking build (Triboulet + Blueprint + Brainstorm) where hand levels matter less than joker mult.
- Late acquisition (Ante 6+) with limited remaining Planet card volume to compound.
- Lean economy without budget to crack packs anyway — Astronomer's value is in the pack-rotation it enables.
