The Idol
Each played of gives 2 Mult when scored Card changes every round
What The Idol does
The Idol gives +2 Mult per scoring card that matches a specific rank AND suit. The rank and suit are randomly chosen and change every round. The Idol's effect text always shows the current target (e.g., "Each played 8 of Hearts gives +2 Mult when scored").
The mechanic is unusual: a randomized target each round, so you can't pre-plan around it. Your job is to play hands that happen to include the target card if it shows up in your draw.
How often The Idol fires
A deck has 4 cards matching any rank+suit (just 1 of each: the specific 8 of Hearts, the specific K of Spades, etc.). Wait — that's wrong: a deck has only 1 card matching a specific rank+suit.
With 1 matching card in 52, the chance of drawing it in any given hand is roughly 8/52 = ~15% (8-card hand).
Triggered hands give +2 Mult per match — usually 1 match if any. So Idol's per-round expected value is about +2 Mult once every 2-3 rounds.
That's low for an Uncommon. Idol's value comes from amplification.
Amplifying Idol with retrigger
The +2 Mult per match is multiplied by retrigger jokers:
- Hanging Chad (first card retriggered 2 more times): if the target is first in scored hand, +6 Mult from one card.
- Sock and Buskin (face card retriggered once): only helps if target is a Jack/Queen/King.
- Seltzer (every scored card retriggered for 10 rounds): +4 Mult per match, expires.
Hanging Chad is the natural pair.
Idol + Pareidolia trick
Pareidolia makes every card a face card. Pareidolia does NOT change rank or suit — Idol's target is rank+suit, so Pareidolia doesn't help Idol directly.
Idol + card multipliers
Where Idol shines is when you can guarantee playing 4-card hand types where the target rank shows up:
- Strength tarot: rank +1. Convert cards into the target rank.
- Death tarot: copy a target card's rank onto another. Forces multiple matches.
But because the rank changes every round, these conversions are wasted next round. You'd need to convert mid-round, which isn't usually feasible.
The reality of Idol
The Idol is solid as Uncommon filler but rarely build-defining. Its randomness means:
- Some rounds: +2 to +4 Mult (if you draw a match).
- Most rounds: 0 Mult contribution.
For pure Mult per slot, jokers like Greedy Joker (+3 Mult per played Diamond, predictable) or Smiley Face (+5 Mult per face card) outperform Idol in stable archetypes.
When to take, when to skip
Take The Idol:
- Hanging Chad in build for amplification.
- Wide-rank deck where you reliably hit any target.
- Filler slot when nothing better is available.
Skip The Idol:
- Specific hand-type builds (Flush only Hearts, all face cards) where the random target often misses.
- Tight slot economy — Idol is medium-floor, low-ceiling.
- Late ante with no Hanging Chad — too few rounds for the average to play out.
