Burnt Joker
Upgrade the level of the first discarded poker hand each round
What Burnt Joker upgrades
Burnt Joker upgrades the level of the first hand type you discard each round by 1. The upgrade is permanent — it stays through the run, stacks with future levels, and applies to that hand type whenever you score it.
Crucially, you discard to trigger Burnt. You don't play the hand. The mechanic is: select cards forming a hand type, hit discard instead of play, and Burnt levels that hand type up by 1.
Why this is the strongest scaler
Hand levels in Balatro scale chips AND mult together. Hand level upgrades are the single most efficient mult source in the game once you stack them.
For comparison, a Pair starts at 10 Chips × 2 Mult = 20 base score. At level 10 (9 upgrades from Burnt) it's 25 Chips × 11 Mult = 275 base — a 13.75× improvement in raw scoring, before any joker multipliers touch it.
Run that math across X-mult jokers and the impact is enormous.
Which hand to feed
Burnt only upgrades the first discard each round. Pick the hand type you'll score with the most:
- Flush builds: discard a 5-card flush every round to level Flush. Most efficient because flushes are easy to discard-fake (5 cards of one suit).
- Pair / Two Pair: discard a Pair to level it. Easy with most decks.
- Straight / Straight Flush: harder to discard if your hand isn't there, but possible with consistent rank coverage.
You only get one Burnt trigger per round, so commit to one hand type and feed it consistently.
Burnt + discard-volume jokers
Burnt rewards a discard-heavy playstyle, which dovetails with several other growth jokers:
- Yorick: every discard counts toward Yorick anyway. Burnt's discard for the upgrade is "free" discard volume for Yorick.
- Hit the Road: discarding Jacks for Burnt also feeds Hit the Road.
- Faceless Joker / Drunkard / Burglar: extra discards mean more flexibility in which 5 cards you commit to the Burnt discard.
What kills Burnt
- The Water (Boss Blind: 0 discards): hard counter. Burnt does nothing that round. Chicot cancels this.
- Discardless builds (Stuntman without Magic Deck, Plasma stake): Burnt slowly starves.
- Late acquisition: Burnt at Ante 6 gets at most 3-4 upgrades. Strong but not run-defining.
When to take
Take Burnt:
- Antes 1-4 when you have 8+ rounds of compounding ahead.
- Discard-heavy build (Yorick, Hit the Road, Drunkard already in play).
- You've decided on a primary hand type.
Skip Burnt:
- No discards available (Plasma without Magic, The Water without Chicot).
- Late ante pickup with little time to compound.
- You're running variety hand types (Obelisk-style) and don't want to commit to one.
